Alleged hijacker arrested with an unlicensed firearm

NELSPRUIT – A 33-year-old male suspect who was arrested for alleged possession of a suspected stolen truck at Mzinti near Tonga on Saturday, 23 July 2022, was also found in possession of an unlicensed firearm.

The said truck was reportedly hijacked at Schoemansdal on the same day. Swift police action and hard work led to the arrest of the suspect barely an hour after the hijacking. Police reportedly searched the suspect before taking him to the Police Station whereby a firearm with its serial number filed off was found in the suspect’s possession. No ammunition was found.

The suspect is expected to appear before the Nkomazi Magistrate’s Court today on charges of possession of suspected stolen vehicle and possession of unlicensed firearm.

The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela has applauded the members for their vigilance. “We believe that this success will somehow boost public confidence so that the community continues to trust police with information. We promise not to disappoint as everyone can see the results which are commendable” said the General.
