VILJOENSDRIFT – Police instincts of two alert members on duty, gave copper cables thieves no chance to succeed with their criminal activities as they arrested two of them and recover a huge amount of copper cables in Viljoensdrift on Tuesday, 28 December 2021 at about 03:40.
The members saw a suspicious motor vehicle, white Mahindra with GP registration and stopped to search it. Immediately when it stopped, four males seated at the back jumped off and ran away on foot. However the members managed to corner a driver and his passenger who were seated inside the motor vehicle.
The load found at the back of the bakkie was 804 metres of contact copper cables worth R122 8883 and 134 metres catenary copper cable valued around R30 667. The total value of this copper cable costs around R153 550. It is suspected that thus copper cable was stolen at Wolwehoek Station near Zamdela and therefore belong to Transnet.
The two male suspects aged between 29 and and 61 were arrested for possession of suspected stolen goods. They will be charged so that they can make their first appearance in Sasolburg Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 30 December 2021.
