The City of Cape Town’s Council-approved the Adjustment Budget for 2012/2022 by allocating an additional R28 million to the Energy Directorate to further enhance and accelerate critical service delivery to residents.
An additional R12 million boost to the department’s meter replacement programme, which is currently being rolled out in areas across the metro, has many benefits for residents including giving residents direct control over their usage and household budgeting. The City will invest a further R5 million in the upgrade and maintenance of high voltage sub-stations across the city. The upgrades and maintenance plays an important role in enhancing reliable electricity provision to residents and businesses.
‘By allocating these extra resources to these important projects, the City hopes to demonstrate its commitment to providing service to residents. Our meter replacement programme is ongoing and is currently being rolled out in several different areas across the city. It is also important that we continue to invest in the maintenance and replacement of older electricity infrastructure to become more resilient.
‘The R5 million investment to the upgrades and maintenance of high voltage infrastructure will ensure that our infrastructure’s lifespan is extended. This is in line with the Energy Directorate’s vision of providing a safe and reliable power supply to all energy users within the city. We thank our teams for their continuous hard work and dedication to the various upgrade and maintenance projects across the metro.
‘We remind residents to help us protect our infrastructure by reporting any suspicious activities near electricity infrastructure to both the SAPS and the City so that we can bring an end to infrastructure theft and vandalism. The City continues to deploy security and monitor hotspot areas where possible but we also rely on our communities to alert us and to help us protect community infrastructure,’ said Councillor Beverley van Reenen the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Energy.
