Acting Provincial Commissioner ordered an investigation regarding a man (60) that died after being allegedly assaulted by SAPS members

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, has ordered an investigation regarding an incident whereby a 60-year-old died in hospital after allegations that he was assaulted by members of the Police. The incident reportedly occurred in Piet Retief whereby two members are said to have attended a Domestic Violence complaint at a certain house.

The circumstances surrounding this tragic incident is still under investigation however the man died in hospital on Monday, 09 September 2024 after being admitted with some injuries.

The SAPS in Mpumalanga is aware of the serious allegations concerning the male victim who died under questionable circumstances as well as the allegations levelled against two police officers who attended a domestic violence complaint in Piet Retief on that fateful night (08 September 2024).

The Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, has strongly condemned this incident and expressed deep concern over any act
ions that compromise the integrity of the police service. “There is nothing that is going to be swept under the table and we can never allow any manner of misconduct by members of the Service. The incident is regrettable, and if these members are found to have taken the law into their own hands, then unfortunately they will have to be charged accordingly and face the full might of the law,” said Major General (Dr) Mkhwanazi.

In light of these allegations, an immediate internal investigation has been initiated to ensure a thorough examination of the circumstances surrounding this incident. We are committed to upholding the highest standards of conduct within our ranks, and any officer found to be in violation of these standards will face appropriate disciplinary action.

Furthermore, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is conducting their own investigation of a murder case.

The SAPS in Mpumalanga will fully cooperate with the IPID in this inquiry, as we believe in transparency and account
ability.
