North West Acting Premier commits to eradicate mud houses

Chaneng - North West Acting Premier, Nono Maloyi has made a commitment to eradicate all mud houses in the province. He maintains this initiative will restore the dignity of many residents living in such conditions.

Premier Maloyi made the commitment when he was handing over a house to a needy resident of Chaneng village in Rustenburg Local Municipality as part of the Nelson Mandela International Day.

The house, which was built with alternative technology methods by a good Samaritan was handed over to Bakang Peter Mahlangu (52) who is the only surviving member of his family and has been living in a dilapidated shack for many years.

Mahlangu thanked the provincial government and all the partners that contributed in building him a house.

“I’ve lived in a shack for many years and never thought I will own such a beautiful house. Today my prayers have been answered. I am a happy man and this house will heal all the pain and suffering that I went through. I can't thank the government enough” said Mahlangu.

MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Desbo Mohono who accompanied Acting Premier handed Mahlangu and other members of the community goats and implements for food gardens as part of government's food security programme.

This year’s Nelson Mandela International Day is celebrated under the theme: “It is in Your Hands”.

In line with this message, Acting Premier Maloyi believes it is possible to rid the province of all mud houses for the benefit of the poor, vulnerable and marginalised.

“Mud houses are not safe; they can collapse, injure or even kill our people, especially during rainy weather. I have instructed my team at the Human Settlements Department that we need to eradicate all mud houses and restore the dignity of our people as a matter of urgency" said Acting Premier Maloyi.
