GAUTENG – A 28-year-old Phumlani Mdaweni, was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for tampering with and damage to essential infrastructure in the Johannesburg Magistrate Court. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

The accused and three of his accomplices cut the overhead cable of the railway line at Selby on the 12 January 2020 at 17:30.

His accomplices managed to run away and police apprehended the accused who was in possession of a railway cable belonging to Prasa worth R20 000-00.

The conviction is a result of diligent work done by the Investigating Officer Warrant Officer Lawrence Makhudu of Johannesburg Central Detectives. We hope this sentence will scare away would-be offenders from committing the same crime.
