The City’s Safety and Security Directorate in collaboration with the Community Service and Health Directorate hosted the launch of an art exhibition titled ‘Celebrating Women’ at the V&A Amphitheatre last night. The event is part of the programme in the run up to FAME week.
25 young artists got the opportunity to create art focussed on celebrating women for Women’s Month.
The aim of the exhibition was to identify new artists, nurture talent and offer a platform to showcase their work.
‘The participants also had the opportunity to attend a training workshop titled ‘Getting Exhibition Ready’.
The training focused on Visual Art awareness: an overview of the South African Art Sector and The Business of Art: from studio to Gallery, amongst other topics.
We are extremely proud to be part of this great initiative in celebrating art during Women’s Month and providing a platform where emerging artists can show their creative work. For a lot of artists this will be a dream come true and the next step to even greater opportunities where artists can learn, share and express their individual talent, said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Service and Health, Councillor Patricia van der Ross.
The exhibition is part of the City’s Emerging Artists Programme which helps under-resourced, emerging artists based in Cape Town, to access opportunities that will help promote their work and develop their profession.
The Emerging Artist’s exhibition is a great run up to and raises awareness for FAME Week Africa as the festival celebrates the transformative power of creativity.
‘The exhibition is a stepping stone towards great opportunities – this is why we support the exhibition in the run up to the big FAME Week Africa event. As an opportunity City, we need to make sure we create platforms for development and empower talented individuals. We are aware of the huge role our creative and art industries play in job creation and in boosting the local economy.’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
The exhibition is co-curated alongside The Justice Desk’s photo exhibition titled ‘A Girl with A Dream’ and opened on 9 August at the V&A Waterfront and will run until 22 August 2022, after which it will be taken to the CTICC for FAME Week Africa which starts on 24 August 2022.
The City of Cape Town is a proud sponsor of FAME week and recognises that this is one of the key events to provide a major boost in the revitalisation of our film and media sectors.
