Subject-matter experts from the Egmont Group, GIABA, OFAC, and other organizations to address evolving AML and sanctions expectations for financial institutions

MIAMI, Nov. 02, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — As part of its efforts to support anti-money laundering (AML) professionals and strengthen financial inclusion around the world, ACAMS will host a virtual training and networking event for its 5th Annual AML & Anti-Financial Crime Conference – Africa. On November 7th, high-level anti-financial crime (AFC) experts from the Egmont Group, Inter-Governmental Action Group Against Money Laundering in West Africa (GIABA), U.S. Treasury Department, Compliance Institute Nigeria, and many of the region’s largest banks, FinTech firms, crypto-asset platforms and other institutions will outline the latest AML and sanctions guidance for compliance professionals working in the region.

The conference will also feature keynote remarks from sanctions compliance officers at the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) and a special presentation and Q&A with Edwin W. Harris Jr., GIABA’s newly appointed Director General.

In addition to taking part in informal networking and professional-development sessions, attendees will learn strategies to strengthen collaboration among AFC stakeholders in the public and private sectors, manage risks associated with designated non-financial businesses and professions (DNFBPs), enhance cyber-hygiene and security for remote workers, and improve financial inclusion through technological solutions designed to mitigate Know Your Customer challenges, among other recommended compliance steps.

“With the Financial Action Task Force calling for more effective compliance and the Russian invasion of Ukraine driving a rise in AML and sanctions risks around the world, it’s more important than ever that financial institutions in Africa stay apprised of emerging threats and the latest best practices to shield themselves from criminal abuse,” said ACAMS CEO Scott Liles. “That’s why the ACAMS Africa Conference is designed to give attendees a platform to pose their most pressing compliance questions to the region’s most knowledgeable experts.”

Orders for the Eviation Alice Pass US$ 2 Billion

Order Book for the World’s First Flight-Tested All-Electric Passenger Airplane Passes Major Milestone

ARLINGTON, Wash., Nov. 2, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Eviation Aircraft, a manufacturer of all-electric aircraft, today announced that the order book for its world-leading nine-seater all-electric Alice airplane has passed a total value of US$ 2 billion.

The Eviation Alice conducted its first flight on 27 September 2022 at Grant County International Airport (MWH), Washington, U.S., the first all-electric commuter airplane to pass this test. This historic achievement marked the start of a new phase in the development of the Alice. Eviation is now focused on its certification program on the way to completing Entry into Service (EIS). Customers for the Alice so far include U.S. regional airlines Cape Air and Global Crossing and German airline operator EVIA AERO.

“Our order book passing the US$ 2 billion mark is a significant commercial milestone,” said Gregory Davis, President and CEO of Eviation. “This success demonstrates that the Alice is leading the industry and meeting the market demand for zero-carbon flight. We are already seeing a growing clamour from passengers for sustainable aviation, matched by an increasingly robust attitude from regulators. By ordering the Alice, our forward-thinking customers are positioning themselves wisely for the future.”

The Alice, built from a clean-sheet design around all-electric propulsion, produces no carbon emissions and costs significantly less to operate per flight hour compared to light jets or high-end turboprops. The aircraft is also quieter than combustion engine aircraft, allowing more flights into cities and communities where noise is a factor. Together, these developments promise to usher in a new era of low-cost point-to-point travel, reshaping the commuter and regional air market. Alice is powered by two magni650 electric propulsion units developed by magniX, the global industry leader in flight-proven electric propulsion systems.

“With almost 300 aircraft now on order, the Alice is receiving strong customer endorsement. The aircraft is capturing the hearts and minds of the marketplace with its beautiful design, low operating costs and carbon zero footprint,” said Eddie Jaisaree, Vice President, Commercial Sales at Eviation. “The Alice will not just protect the planet but also create a more enjoyable flight experience for passengers. Considering the environmental and fuel cost challenges facing conventional airlines, incorporating the Alice into our customers’ fleets will give them a significant competitive advantage.”

CCTV+: Lyrics of In the Name of Youth

BEIJING, Nov. 2, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Ruijin, the cradle of the People’s Republic of China, has created countless firsts in history. Songping Village is a historic site. On a wall, there wrote a few essays, rough in lines but tender in style, appearing to be doodles of pupils. In fact, these essays were written by the Red Army soldiers, who studied here some 90 years ago.

In the 1930s, the Kuomintang carried out a raging military “encirclement and suppression” and economic blockade in the Central Soviet Area. In 1933, the Communication School of the Chinese Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army was established at Pingshan Hill of Songping Village during the ravaging war. A group of young Red Army soldiers, aged 16 to 17, with lower than elementary school-level knowledge, diligently studied radio technology to build the communication network for the Red Army.

It has been 90 years since then. Today’s young students may not be able to feel the hunger and thirst for knowledge of the youth in those days. After 90 years, we can no longer decipher how the young soldiers felt when they painted the graffiti on the wall. However, we can see traces of their lives here. This is the place where their loud reciting voices and their flourishing youth were recorded. It was during those years that they bravely rushed to the battlefield of communication only after a short period of learning.

The once teenagers became fading figures in the ocean of time, but their essays on the wall are still clear. What the rough and tender strokes represent is the indelible spirit of the Red Army. After 90 years, the wish behind the graffiti has already come true. The loyalty, faith, dedication, and sacrifices of generations of Communists have initiated the great revival of the Chinese nation. The shadows of the past are bygone, but the red mark on the land of Jiangxi has never faded and shall always remain brilliant.

Golden oldies ‘not out’ at annual Golden Games

The City of Cape Town’s Recreation and Parks Department hosted its annual Golden Games for seniors at the Green Point Track today. Hundreds of older residents participated in the event, also known as the Seniors Olympics.

The event is aimed at empowering the elderly and encouraging them to keep physically active and healthy.

Almost a hundred seniors from Hangberg, Imizamo Yethu, Woodstock and Bo-Kaap, participated in a variety of events including relays, egg and spoon races, bowling, netball and many more.

‘Our older residents play an important role in our communities as they bring wisdom, experience and calm. They are also one of the vulnerable groups and are often neglected or forgotten. Our senior clubs give them the opportunity to interact socially with their peers and enjoy recreational activities to keep them healthy and alert,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Patricia van der Ross.

The highlights of the day was a freestyle dance competition, which brought about much fun and laughter as the seniors cheered each other on.

At 82 years old, Ms Juliana Opperman from Hangberg was the oldest participant on the day, proving that one can maintain a healthy mind and body at any age.

To join a senior club near you, please visit your local City community centre listed on www.capetown.gov.za or email RP.enquiries@capetown.gov.za  for more information.

Title deeds handed over to The Hague home owners

The City of Cape Town’s Mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis, members of the Human Settlements Portfolio Committee and Subcouncil councillors handed over title deeds to beneficiaries of The Hague housing project in Delft today, 2 November 2022.

‘If Cape Town is to become a more economically inclusive city, it is crucial that everyone, including the most vulnerable Capetonians, are able to access the property market. Formal property ownership allows people to live in dignified conditions and promotes physical security. In addition, ownership of real assets breaks the cycle of intergenerational poverty and offers financial security.

‘In line with our commitment to the dignity and inclusion of our least well off residents, we believe that no Capetonian should be a permanent tenant of the state. Today’s title deed handover is yet another important moment in our accelerated title deed handover programme, which will continue over the years to come, allowing people to own their homes rather than being perpetual renters,’ said Mayor Hill-Lewis.

‘We are pleased to assist more beneficiaries with the title deeds to their homes at The Hague. This is a mega project and will provide 2 400 affordable opportunities to residents. The handover of title deeds will be ongoing on a month-to-month basis and we urge beneficiaries to make sure their contact details are up to date as SMSs will be sent once they are ready for collection. We look forward to assisting many more residents with the title deeds to their homes. They are some of the most poor in the metro and really stand to benefit by having their title deed,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Councillor Malusi Booi.

EPWP to improve efficiency after council approves policy amendments

After several rounds of stakeholder and public consultation, amendments to two policies governing the implementation of the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) were passed in Council last week.

The Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) seeks to alleviate poverty while at the same time improve and expand public services in a cost-effective way.

The implementation of EPWP and the recruitment of jobseekers are guided by the following City policies:

Implementation of the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) Policy

Management of the Jobseekers Database Policy

Since the programme was initiated, the City has been grappling with some challenges around its implementation, mainly a lack of clarity around roles and responsibilities, and standard operating procedures.

Between May 2021 and October 2021 over 16 000 comments were received from the public and consolidated during a public awareness campaign, and intensive engagements and workshops were undertaken with both internal stakeholders and community leaders around proposed changes to governing policies.

Apart from clarifying standard operating procedures, some of the effected changes include increased accountability of those assigned to lead the implementation of the EPWP in the City and increased responsibility on jobseekers when it comes to updating their details on the database.

‘With the benefit of experience over many years implementing this programme the City is now in a good position to refine standard operating procedures where this was required, to maximise the value this programme offers to both job seekers and the ratepayer.

‘The City sees a lot of potential in the EPWP to uplift residents and this is reflected by our position at the forefront of policy development in this space.

‘All of the key policy principles around coordination, quality of the work opportunity, resource mobilisation (mainstreaming) are issues which the City has been working on for at least the last IDP cycle – and so we are aligned to National’s policy principles’ document,’  said Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Waste Management, Alderman Grant Twigg.
