Government commits to address concerns of Sedibeng communities

Minister in the Presidency, Mondli Gungubele, has assured local communities of the Sedibeng District Municipality that government is going to attend to their concerns.

Gungubele was speaking on Wednesday during a visit to the area ahead of the Presidential Imbizo on Friday.

Most residents used the opportunity to raise their concerns about sewage spills, a lack of electricity, inadequate health facilities and potholes.

Gungubele encouraged the local communities to attend the Presidential Imbizo, as this will be their platform to raise all their concerns with President Cyril Ramaphosa.

“Government will attend to all your concerns. Our government is a caring government,” Gungubele said.

The Minister started his monitoring visit at the local Home Affairs offices where, upon his arrival, he was welcomed by municipal officials who briefed him about the situation in the municipality.

After the briefing, the Minister embarked on a walkabout at Home Affairs, interacting with people who came for the various services offered by the department.

“We are here as government to assess your needs. Government is committed to improving people’s lives,” Gungubele said.

The Presidential Imbizo will be held under the theme, ‘Leave No One Behind’. It will take place at the Sharpeville Cricket Pitch, where leaders from all three spheres of government will interact with residents on service delivery challenges that communities have brought to government’s attention, as well plans for the development of the district.

A local resident who came to apply for his Smart ID Card, Benjamin Letlotlo, told SAnews that he is looking forward to the imbizo.

“It will be our chance to tell him about the lack of services in this area. We need proper roads and more health facilities,” he said.

From the municipal offices, Gungubele proceeded to a local clinic, Thlokomelong, to assess services at the facility.

The Minister was welcomed by the staff who briefed him about operations at the clinic and also interacted with those seeking healthcare.

“I want the Minister to help to get a bigger clinic. This is small and there’s few staff. I want the President to see for himself the situation at the clinic. We want a better and bigger clinic,” said Kgaugelo Motsamai, who brought his child for immunisation.

From the clinic, Gungubele proceeded to the Zone 17 clinic, where he interacted with the staff.

“I am happy that soon you will be moving into a new building where you will better serve the community,” the Minister told staff.

He also toured the new building and expressed his satisfaction. “The building is nice and big. The community will be better served here,” he added.

Leaving no one behind

The Sedibeng Presidential Imbizo will be the fourth interaction between the President and local communities. It follows oversight visits by the President to the North West, Free State and Mpumalanga.

The President committed to engaging with communities throughout South Africa in the February 2022 State of the Nation Address.

The President will use the Sedibeng visit to assess progress in service delivery and in the implementation of the Economic Reconstruction and Recovery Plan.

The Sedibeng District Municipality comprises Emfuleni, Midvaal and Lesedi local municipalities, which all have high levels of unemployment, skills shortages and aged water and sanitation infrastructure, which results in sewer blockages, spillages, pump station breakdowns, water leaks and pipe bursts.

Government is responding with various actions, including a R700 million allocation to Rand Water to rehabilitate the Vaal sewer network. Funding is also being sourced to upgrade bulk infrastructure, such as electricity, roads, water and sewerage.

Major progress has been made towards the designation of the Vaal Special Economic Zone (SEZ). The provincial government has received commitments from local investors to the tune of R40 billion and the SEZ holds the potential to create 170 000 jobs over five years.

Eskom warns of possible Stage 2 load shedding

A shortage in generation capacity may at short notice see Stage 2 load shedding being implemented between 4pm and 11pm on Wednesday, Eskom has warned.

In a statement, the power utility said breakdowns of one generation unit at Majuba, one at Tutuka and two at Kriel power stations had put severe strain on the power generation system.

“Eskom cautions the public that Stage 2 load shedding would be required to be implemented at short notice this evening at 4pm and 11pm should any significant breakdowns occur.”

Eskom said the delay in returning generation units at Arnot, a unit each at Kusile and Hendrina power stations had exacerbated the electricity generation constraints.

“We currently have 4 479 MW on planned maintenance, while another 12 951 MW of capacity is unavailable due to breakdowns. We therefore urge all South Africans to continue using electricity sparingly, especially during these uncertain times on the power system. Eskom will promptly communicate should a need arise,” reads the statement.

President undertakes Presidential Imbizo in Sedibeng District Municipality

President Cyril Ramaphosa will on Friday lead the fourth instalment of the District Development Model (DDM) Presidential Imbizo in the Sedibeng District Municipality in Gauteng.

The Presidential Imbizo will take place at the Sharpeville Cricket Pitch under the theme: Leave No One Behind.

The visit is part of efforts to roll out the District Development Model (DDM) and lend a helping hand in implementing the accelerated service delivery initiatives.

The Presidential Imbizo affords all social partners, government, traditional leaders, civil society organs (labour, women, youth, persons with disabilities, business) and communities an opportunity to collectively engage on how to best address the immediate challenges and to create conditions for long-lasting stability and development.

The Imbizo in Sedibeng will see leaders from all three spheres of government interact with residents on service delivery challenges which communities have brought to government’s attention, as well plans for the development of this district.

In all districts countrywide, the District Development Model is based on a “One District. One Plan” approach in which all three spheres of government and representatives of civil society jointly plan development.

“This approach aims to address service delivery challenges, advance local procurement and create jobs in ways that promote social cohesion and economic opportunities in the 44 Districts and 8 Metros around the country,” the Presidency said in a statement.

The Sedibeng Presidential Imbizo will be the fourth interaction of this kind, following oversight visits by President Ramaphosa to the North West, Free State and Mpumalanga since his commitment in the February 2022 State of the Nation Address that he would engage with communities throughout South Africa.

“The President will use the Sedibeng visit to assess progress in service delivery and in the implementation of the Economic Reconstruction and Recovery Plan,” the Presidency said.

The Sedibeng District Municipality comprises the Emfuleni, Midvaal and Lesedi local municipalities.

All these municipalities feature high levels of unemployment, skills shortages and aged water and sanitation infrastructure that results in sewer blockages, spillages, pump station breakdowns, water leaks and pipe bursts.

“Government is responding with various actions, including a R700 million allocation to Rand Water to rehabilitate the Vaal sewer network. Funding is also being sourced to upgrade bulk infrastructure, such as electricity, roads, water and sewerage.

“Major progress has been made towards the designation of the Vaal Special Economic Zone (SEZ),” the Presidency said.

The Presidency said the provincial government has received commitments from local investors to the tune of R40 billion and the SEZ holds the potential to create 170 000 jobs over five years.

The special economic zone will ensure an increase in skilled labour, easy access to a strong consumer base and connectivity to suppliers and potential markets.

It will also promote export-orientated industries and local integration. More than 3 000 hectares of land has been secured across all the local municipalities in the Sedibeng District for the SEZ.

Growing Gauteng Together (GGT) 2030 has identified a number of catalytic investment projects in the Sedibeng District, such as :

• The Savannah City housing development;

• Vaal River City and the Vaal University Village precinct;

• A cargo airport and logistics hub;

• The Vaal Special Economic Zone;

• The AB InBev investment project;

• The Vaal Marina development and logistics and mining investments in Lesedi; and

E Cape CoGTA condemns illegal Amathole District staff strike

Eastern Cape Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (GoGTA) MEC, Xolile Nqatha, has condemned a violent illegal strike by some Amathole District Municipality (ADM) staff.

Some ADM workers have been embarking on an illegal strike that has caused great panic and a water crisis for the communities.

On Wednesday, the provincial CoGTA said the workers had allegedly vandalized water infrastructure and closed water valves blocking water supply to communities, businesses, government institutions, hospitals and clinics.

“The illegal strike has also badly affected the services of the Transnet Phelophepa Health Train which is currently stationed at Raymond Mhlaba Local Municipality.

“Whilst workers have a constitutional right to embark on strike or protest action, they need to understand that water is an essential service, and they don’t have a right to infringe on other people’s rights especially from accessing water for our communities,” said CoGTA spokesperson Mamnkeli Ngam.

On Tuesday, Nqatha visited the affected areas and reservoirs in Raymond Mhlaba and Amahlathi Local municipalities to witness the damage caused by this illegal strike.

He said: “Some of the things that have been done are quite harmful and they gravitate towards criminality because what is underway is criminality. It is criminal to close water; water is life; it can’t be justified action or revolutionary to deny our people water”.

The MEC called on all the affected municipalities to ensure that there is accountability and consequences for wrongdoing.
