Police: Nine Killed in Separate Shootings in South Africa

Police are on the hunt for suspects after nine people were fatally shot in separate shooting incidents in two provinces of South Africa on Saturday night, police said on Sunday.

The latest slew of shootings come on the heels of an uptick in violent deaths in a country with one of the world's highest murder rates.

Four people were shot and two more were injured at the Thembelihle informal settlement in the Gauteng province. Preliminary investigation suggests that a group of men were playing dice at a street corner, at approximately 19:30 p.m. (1730 GMT) on Saturday, when they were attacked by unknown assailants who shot at them, the authorities said in statement.

"Four people were certified dead on the scene on Saturday while two people were taken to the nearest medical care center after sustaining gunshot wounds," the police said.

In another separate incident also at Thembelihle, in the south of Johannesburg, a 36-year-old man who appeared to have been robbed of his belongings, including a cellphone and bicycle was found shot dead, they added.

Police said that the motive for the shootings cannot be confirmed at this stage.

Meanwhile in the Western Cape Province, police have launched an investigation into the circumstances of a triple murder last night in Khayelitsha township. A fourth one was an unrelated incident, Colonel Andrê Traut said.

On Friday, eight suspects linked to the "random" separate shooting and robbery incidents of six people on Thursday night at the Alexandra township in Johannesburg were arrested, officials said.

It was not yet clear whether the suspects in the Alexandra shooting were in the same group that carried out all the killings.

Around 20,000 people are murdered in South Africa every year out of a population of about 60 million.

City advises of water supply disruption in the Montague Gardens Industrial area

City conducts maintenance at Tygerberg Reservoir and linked bulk water supply mains

The public are advised that there will be a water supply disruption to the Karl Bremer Hospital, the St. Johannis Lifestyle Estate, PetroSA, Bellville, Welgemoed, Brooklyn, Sanddrift, Tygerhof, Rugby, Century City, Paarden Eiland, Joe Slovo, Phoenix, Kensington, Acacia Park and Goodwood areas from Friday, 22 July 2022 at 18:00 until Sunday, 24 July 2022 at 22:00.

The City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate will be replacing two 535mm diameter outlet valves at its Tygerberg Reservoir, as well as replacing a 500mm diameter meter on the Bellville bulk water main and repairing a leak on the bulk water main in Frans Conradie Avenue on Friday, 22 July 2022 from 18:00 until Sunday, 24 July 2022 at 22:00.

This work will require the reservoir to be shut off as well as shutting down the 1 220mm diameter Tygerberg water pipeline between Giel Basson Drive and Jakes Gerwel Drive so the work can be done safely.

This work forms part of the City’s bulk water supply infrastructure maintenance programme.

This shutdown will affect the water supply in the above mentioned areas.

Planning has been done to minimise the possibility of water supply disruption to consumers during this period by rerouting water supply to the affected areas as far as possible. A number of activities in this regard has already commenced to achieve this. The three sets of repairs will be completed at different times within the shutdown period.

Although no significant water supply disruption other than lower than usual water pressure is anticipated, consumers in the affected areas are kindly requested to reduce their water consumption during this period to maintain available water supply and pressure in the pipe network until the repairs are completed.

The City sincerely regrets the inconvenience caused, and appreciates residents’ cooperation as it is imperative that it maintains its water supply infrastructure to the benefit of its consumers.
