Organised crime detectives initiate probe after 6 killed in Khayelitsha

WESTERN CAPE – Organised crime detectives have opened murder dockets for investigation following an incident where five yet-to-be identified men were shot and killed and a sixth person died at a medical facility in Khayelitsha on Sunday evening.

Reports from the scene indicate police were called out to the corner of Maphongwana and Idada Street in Site C after 20:00 on Sunday evening where they found the bodies of the five victims who had been shot. A sixth person who had been rushed to hospital was certified dead on arrival.

Organised crime detectives are hard at work busy with an investigation which was initiated immediately.

Details of the deceased persons are currently being determined.

A 37-year-old man busted after 35 Bonsmara cattle were stolen

FREE STATE – On the 06 May 2022, thirty five Bonsmara cattle were stolen from a farm in Odendaalsrus and the case of Stock Theft was registered for further investigation. The case was assigned to the following members Lejweleputswa District Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit, Constable Galeboe, Sergeant Ramatsa and Warrant Officer Coen de Beer whereby tracks were followed up for several km which ended at a maize field, 10 cattle were found abandoned.

Additional 19 cattle were found 7 km from the farm where live stock was stolen. So six cattle are still missing and the 29 cattle were handed back to the owner which were positively identified as his live stock. Two suspects were found with the cattle one suspect was arrested and the second suspect managed to flee. A manhunt has been launched for the second suspect.

The apprehended suspect is expected to appear today in Odendaalsrus Magistrate Court.

Six alleged drug syndicate members to appear in court

KWAZULU-NATAL – On Saturday, 7 May 2022 Hawks members from Pietermaritzburg` Serious Organised Crime Investigation and Crime Intelligence arrested six suspects aged between 32 and 50 for dealing in drugs at Pietermaritzburg area.

In October 2020 two accused, Zolile Zikalala (42) and Katlego Phahlane (26) were intercepted on the N3 near Hilton in Pietermaritzburg. They were found in possession of 30 000 mandrax tablets to the street value of approximately R1.5 million and were placed under arrest.

Hawks members continued with an intensive investigation that led to the arrest of the six more suspects on the weekend. During the operation members seized four jaws of crack cocaine and R54 080.00 suspected to be proceeds of crime.

Zikalala and Phahlane are currently out on bail and their accomplices are expected to appear in the Pietermaritzburg Regional Court today.

SAPS arrest second suspect for the five people killed in Harare

WESTERN CAPE – Members attached to the Provincial Organised Crime investigation team conducted a suspect tracing operation in the Eastern Cape with the assistance of Lady Frere SAPS and arrested a 29-year-old male in Lower Lufuta, Cala, Eastern Cape yesterday.

The male is the second suspect to be arrested in connection with the murder of the five people who were shot and killed in New Monwabisi Park, Harare on 13 March 2022. He is expected to appear in the Khayelitsha Magistrates court tomorrow.

A third suspect is believed to have been involved in this matter and the Provincial Organise Crime investigators are still searching for him.

Two suspected hitmen arrested for conspiracy to murder and possession of unlicensed firearm

FREE STATE – On Sunday 8 May 2022 Dewetsdorp Visible Policing members followed information about two African males who arrived in town with a plan to commit murder. The police searched for the alleged hitmen and traced them to a part of Morojaneng. The two suspects started running when noticing the approaching police vehicle. The police gave chase and arrested one of the suspects.

The search for the other suspect continued until he was traced to one of the liquor outlets in town. A firearm loaded with five (5) live rounds was found on the second suspect.

A case of Conspiracy to commit murder and possession of unlicensed firearm was opened at Dewetsdorp Police Station. Suspects, both 30-year-old will appear in Dewetsdorp Magistrate Court on Tuesday 10 May 2022.

20-year-old rapist incarcerated for statutory rape

A 20-year-old man was found guilty and sentenced for statutory rape and sentenced to six years imprisonment, which has been suspended for five years.

The accused impregnated the 15-year-old girl. On the 10 February 2022, Warrant Officer Melany Olifant attached to the De Aar FCS unit was alerted by the Department of Social Development of a 15-year-old female who gave birth.

The investigating officer instituted an investigation into the pregnancy of the victim. The victim confessed to the investigating officer, and directed her to the 20-year-old accused.

 

The accused was arrested and charged with statutory rape. On Monday, 09 May 2022 the De Aar Regional Court sent a stern warning to the accused by sentencing him to six years imprisonment, which was suspended for five years.

The accused’s name was ordered to be entered in the National Sex Offenders Register and he was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

This sentence was welcomed by the Provincial Management as the country is observing Child Protection month dedicated to children during which we are obligated to protect the rights of children.

SA records 5 486 new COVID-19 cases

South Africa on Sunday recorded 5 486 new COVID-19, says the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD).

Representing a 25.3% positivity rate, the figure brought the total number of laboratory-confirmed cases to 3 841 388.

In the 24-hours, the National Department of Health confirmed seven COVID-19 related deaths.

“Of these, five occurred in the past 24 – 48 hours,” said the NICD.

The seven deaths brought the total fatalities to 100 523 to date.

As of Sunday, 24 675 963 tests had been conducted in both public and private sectors.

A provincial breakdown of the statistics reveals that the majority of new cases on Sunday were from Gauteng Province (40%) followed by KwaZulu-Natal (26%).

“Western Cape accounted for 17%; Free State accounted for 5%; Eastern Cape and North West each accounted for 3% respectively; Mpumalanga and Northern Cape each accounted for 2% respectively; and Limpopo accounted for <1% of today’s new cases,” the NICD said.

The 25.3% proportion of positive cases was lower than Saturday’s 31.1%.

“The 7-day average is (24.3%) today, and is higher than yesterday (23.8%). The 7-day moving average daily number of cases has increased,” reads the statement.

On hospital admissions, the Institute said these had increased by 43 in the reporting cycle.
