A 20-year-old man was found guilty and sentenced for statutory rape and sentenced to six years imprisonment, which has been suspended for five years.

The accused impregnated the 15-year-old girl. On the 10 February 2022, Warrant Officer Melany Olifant attached to the De Aar FCS unit was alerted by the Department of Social Development of a 15-year-old female who gave birth.

The investigating officer instituted an investigation into the pregnancy of the victim. The victim confessed to the investigating officer, and directed her to the 20-year-old accused.

The accused was arrested and charged with statutory rape. On Monday, 09 May 2022 the De Aar Regional Court sent a stern warning to the accused by sentencing him to six years imprisonment, which was suspended for five years.

The accused’s name was ordered to be entered in the National Sex Offenders Register and he was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

This sentence was welcomed by the Provincial Management as the country is observing Child Protection month dedicated to children during which we are obligated to protect the rights of children.
