The City of Cape Town and its partner Garden Cities handed over 16 more homes today, 17 February 2022, to beneficiaries at the R74 million Greenville Phase 3 subsidised housing project in Durbanville. In February 2022, the City handed over 32 homes and will continue to hand over homes to beneficiaries in the coming months.
Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Councillor Malusi Booi and Human Settlements Directorate officials celebrated with the families as they handed over keys of the brand new homes to the families.
‘Today is a truly special day for the latest project beneficiaries and the City, and we are happy to celebrate this day with them. This project already provides more than 1 897 opportunities to the most vulnerable residents and will provide approximately 4 000 BNG housing opportunities, social housing, financed linked houses and commercial opportunities once it is completed. The Greenville Phase 3 project also uses Alternative Building Technologies (ABT) such as the Benex Block during the construction phase, which is exciting. The City continues to look for innovative ways to improve service delivery.
‘We congratulate the latest beneficiaries and over the coming months we plan to handover many more homes to qualifying beneficiaries. We are pleased to announce that the project is moving along swiftly and construction progress is on track. We remain committed to housing provision and will continue to deliver more housing opportunities to beneficiaries in areas across the city.
‘We remind residents that the selection of beneficiaries for all City housing projects is done in accordance with the City’s Allocation Policy and the City’s Housing Needs Register to ensure that housing opportunities are allocated to qualifying beneficiaries in a fair and equitable manner. Residents should visit their nearest housing office to find out more about the available opportunities, and how to apply. Residents must remember to keep their information updated on our records so that they are alerted when an opportunity becomes available,’ said Councillor Booi.

The homes in Phase 3 are built with alternative building technologies and uses the Benex Block. The Benex Blocks are locally manufactured.
The blocks are lightweight, thermal efficient and easy to use during construction. Due to the easy installation, Garden Cities is able to use skilled and unskilled labour from the community.
The R74 million Greenville project is a partnership between the City’s Human Settlements Directorate, the Western Cape Government’s Department of Human Settlements and developer, Garden Cities.
Phases 1 and 2 saw a combined cost of R247 million, with Phase 2 being completed in August 2020.
