16 Days of Activism awareness campaign gains momentum in Diepsloot

JOHANNESBURG DISTRICT – Diepsloot SAPS in partnership with local stakeholders have today embarked on a “16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children” awareness campaign at a local taxi rank in Extension 2.

The police in conjunction with stakeholders targeted commuters in the morning, mobilising them to take a firm stand against gender-based violence by reporting perpetrators to the police. Commuters were given pamphlets with tips to prevent gender-based violence and emergency numbers to call when they need assistance.

The Diepsloot SAPS station commander, Brigadier Moichela also joined members on the ground through interacting with commuters and urging them to break the silence on gender-based violence.

In his address, he assured the audience that police officers have a duty to assist victims of GBV with respect and dignity. He further assured them that members who subject victims of GBV to secondary victimisation will be disciplined accordingly.

The station commander concluded his address by pleading with local stakeholders to further partner with the police and intensify GBV awareness campaigns, even beyond the “16 Days of Activism” campaign.
