The City of Cape Town wants to caution motorists travelling on Swartklip Road (M49) between Spine Road and Baden Powell Drive, that the road shoulder has collapsed. Road repair teams are busy reinstating temporary works on this section.

Last night the teams backfilled the section, and placed some sandbags as a temporary safety measure to prevent the road shoulder from further erosion. Some of these have been washed away overnight due to the ongoing rain, and the teams went back this morning to reinstate the temporary works until such time as the weather allows for permanent work to be undertaken.

We appeal to motorists travelling along this section of Swartklip Road to please exercise extra caution, to slow down, and to avoid the shoulder of the road. Also, we recommend that road users consider alternative routes as far as possible.

The City is doing everything possible to secure the road, however, our efforts are further complicated by inclement weather.

It is uncertain what caused the shoulder to collapse, the City will conduct an investigation as soon as the cold front has cleared.
