WESTERN CAPE – Efforts to fight the illegal possession of firearms in the Western Cape have once again resulted in arrests in Athlone and Delft.
On Sunday, 04 July 2021 at about 17:10, Lockdown II members conducted an intelligence driven operation at a premises in Hammerkop Street, Bridgetown, Athlone after receiving information about firearms. The members searched the house and the occupants and found a 17-year-old suspect in possession of a firearm and six rounds of ammunition. He was arrested and is expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrates court today.
In an unrelated matter on Monday, 05 July 2021 at 00:10, Western Cape Public Order Policing members on patrols in Delft arrested a 19-year-old male for possession of a 9mm Astra pistol and 17 rounds of ammunition at a premises in Groenland Street, Voorbrug, Delft. Once charge he will appear in court on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
At 00:45, the members were on patrol in Hartenberg Street, Voorbrug, Delft when they saw a suspicious looking male, who was found to be in the possession of a .38 Rossi revolver and five rounds of ammunition. The 19-year-old male was arrested for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. He is due to appear in court once charged.
Meanwhile on 05 July 2021 at 15:40, Mitchells Plain Crime Prevention Unit was busy conducting patrols in Spine Road, when they stopped and searched a suspicious male and found him in possession of 12 packets of Methamphetamine, a half mandrax tablet and 40 small sachets filled with heroin. The 38-year-old man was arrested and detained. Once charged, he is expected to appear in the Mitchells Plain Magistrate court on a charge of possession of drugs.
