Stepfather receives life for rape in Kathu

NORHTHERN CAPE – The Acting  Provincial Commissioner of the Northern Cape, Major General Johan Bean welcomes the life sentence that was handed down to a 50-year-old stepfather in the Kuruman Regional Court on 03 June 2021.

On 4 June 2017, the stepfather lured his 12-year-old stepdaughter into the room with promises to play a game. The girl was left in the care of the stepfather who raped her at their home in Kathu.

The victim reported the rape to a friend at school and the accused was arrested the following day. The accused received R1000-00 bail 18 months later and was sentenced to life imprisonment on 3 June 2021.

“The Provincial Head for Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit, Brig Nicky Mills commended D/Sgt Boikanyo Pilane of the Kathu FCS unit for the meticulous investigation that led to this outstanding sentence during this period when the country is observing Child Protection Week. The SAPS will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that perpetrators of such heinous crimes are trialled and prosecuted accordingly, said Mills.”
