Second suspect arrested for alleged trafficking in persons

NORTHERN CAPE – A 29 year old suspect was arrested by a multi-disciplinary team comprising of Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation Northern Cape and Gauteng, Crime Intelligence Northern Cape, Local Criminal Record Centre Gauteng and Douglasdale South African Police Services (SAPS) during an intelligence driven ongoing investigation into alleged trafficking in persons.

The suspect was arrested on Saturday, 29 May 2021 at Sandton. It is alleged that victims were lured from Upington, Northern Cape to Sandton and were used for prostitution.

A search was conducted in an apartment at Sandton which is reported to be used as a brothel. During the search, three victims aged between 19 and 24 were rescued.  Cellphones and an undisclosed amount of money were seized.

The suspect is expected to appear before Upington Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 31 May 2021 where he will be joined by his co-accused Emmanuel Uzoaga (33).
