Police officer in custody for corruption

KWAZULU-NATAL – A 50-year-old police officer is expected to appear in the Durban Specialised Commercial Crime Court today, 9 July 2021 after he was arrested by the Hawks members from the Durban Serious Corruption Investigation team yesterday for corruption.

It is alleged that the arrested police officer from Tongaat police station detectives demanded a gratification of R10 000 from a complainant who is a suspect in the case of theft by false pretence. He allegedly promised him to squash the case docket against him. The matter was reported to the Hawks members and a covert operation was conducted. He was arrested immediately after collecting that cash from the complainant.

Prior this incident, the complainant alleges that in February this year he was called by the same police officer to discuss the case. After the meeting, the police officer demanded R2000 for lunch and the complainant gave him. He further convinced the complainant to give him R30 000 that was going to be refunded to the complainant in the case of theft by false pretence with a promise that he is going to pay that cash on his behalf.
