NORTHERN CAPE – August is a month dedicated to celebrating women in South Africa and also paying tribute to the women who marched to the Union Buildings on 09 August 1956 in protest against the extension of the then Pass Laws on women which meant to control women and reduce them to passive beings.
This year’s Women’s Month is dedicated to Charlotte Maxeke under the theme of: “Generational Equality: Realising Women’s Rights for an Equal Future”.
As part of commemorating this month, the women in the law enforcement in Northern Cape held an operation today, 06 August 2021in Colesberg. The operation included a roadblock at the N1, patrols and enforcement of the Disaster Management Act.
The MEC for Transport, Safety and Liaison, Ms Nomandla Bloem was present to encourage and motivate the females. She urged them to be bold, smart and not let circumstances derail them from their God given purpose. The Deputy Provincial Commissioner: Crime Detection, Major General Koliswa Otola also gave a word of motivation before the duties commenced.
She urged the female members not to look down on themselves just because they are women. “Although we are in the field that was previously meant for men, it does not mean we cannot perform equally if not more than men. We are more capable of leading and bringing change in the law enforcement, let us believe in each other, most importantly in ourselves”, she said.
The operation ended with one illegal immigrant arrested and 19 fines amounting to R11 300-00 issued for contravening the Road Traffic Act.
