POTCHEFSTROOM: The 25-year-old Mimi Mokoena was remanded in custody until Thursday, 1 July 2021 for legal representation. Mokoena appeared in the Ga-rankuwa Magistrates’ Court today on charges of murder, perjury and obstructing / defeating the ends of justice.
The accused’s court appearance stems from an incident in which her one-month-old baby was found on the river banks by a passer-by on Sunday, 27 June 2021. That was after Mokoena had on Saturday, 26 June 2021, summoned the police to her place and ultimately registered a case of kidnapping. According to the reports, Mokoena informed the police that two unknown men armed with a firearm and panga, forcefully gained entrance into her shack at Itsoseng Phase 2, in Hebron at about 19:00 on Saturday, 26 June 2021, and demanded to see her boyfriend. Upon being told that the boyfriend was not home, the men allegedly instructed her to seal her and her baby’s mouths with a sellotape and ultimately fled from the scene with the baby.
Subsequent to intensive investigation by Bojanala Platinum Sub-District 2’s Trio Task Team, the mother admitted to killing the baby. As a result, she was arrested and charged with murder, perjury and obstructing / defeating the ends of justice.
The Provincial Commissioner of North West, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena welcomed the arrest, which he said it will send a clear message that the police will not hesitate to take action against those who register false cases as that is tantamount to abusing the much needed state resources.
