Minister Sisulu to receive Eskom Building that will be converted into affordable accommodation in Johannesburg
The Minister of Human Settlements, Water and Sanitation, Lindiwe Sisulu will on Monday, 14 June 2021 receive a building from Eskom which has been acquired by the Housing Development Agency (HDA) in order to provide decent and affordable accommodation for people living in the City of Johannesburg.
Situated in Braamfontein, the building consists of 16 floors and 200 parking bays. It is well located within the City and close to amenities including institutions of higher learning. When complete, the development is expected to assist thousands of students with affordable off-campus accommodation. The building is also expected to respond to the demand of decent and affordable accommodation in the inner city through the provision of social housing.
Eskom is in the process of disposing some of its non-core properties to the market. The HDA, an agency of the Department of Human Settlements undertook site visits and compiled a preliminary assessment of the properties and identified a need for the purchase of some of the properties and their possible use.
Similar buildings in other provinces have been identified including the recent building Minister Sisulu handed over to the Northern Cape Premier, Dr Zamani Saul in Kimberly.
