Lengthy sentence for firearm related charges welcomed by SAPS

Serious and violent crimes and the illegal possession of firearms are high on our priority list and every endeavour is made to disarm criminals in this province. It is on this basis that the hefty sentence handed down to 29-year-old Brendon Opperman of Kraaifontein this morning in the Blue Downs Magistrates’ court is welcomed, as it should serve as a deterrent against the illegal possession of a firearm.

Opperman was arrested during April 2019 in Scottsville when members of the Kraaifontein Crime Prevention Unit pursued information of firearms in his possession. His residence was searched and two revolvers, four semi-automatic pistols, 2208 rounds of ammunition and 6507 mandrax tablets were confiscated.

The arrest and seizure by our uniformed officers and the thorough investigation by our detectives contributed to the total sentence of 95 years handed down to Opperman on all the charges. Some of the sentences will be served concurrently and he will be incarcerated for 35 years direct imprisonment. The police members and the prosecuting team are commended by the Western Cape police management for ensuring that firearms and a criminal were removed from the streets.
