DURBAN: Yesterday morning at 06:30, police officers from the Phoenix Trio Task Team were following up intelligence about suspects involved in robberies committed in Durban and surrounding areas.
While they were at Ntuzuma, a vehicle with five men was spotted driving recklessly along Mgwenya Road. The said vehicle was intercepted however four men jumped out of the vehicle and disappeared into an informal settlement. Police were able to arrest the driver as he attempted to flee. He was searched and was found with a vehicle key in his pocket.
The suspect’s vehicle was also searched and police found a toy gun and house breaking implements in the boot of the vehicle. A preliminary investigation conducted at the scene revealed that the vehicle was hijacked at Phoenix during May 2021. The 28-year-old suspect was placed under arrest for possession of a stolen vehicle as well as possession of house breaking implements.
Further investigation led the team to Soweto area in Ntuzuma where another vehicle was found. It was established that the vehicle was hijacked at Newlands in May 2021. A 30-year-old suspect was placed under arrest for being in possession of a stolen vehicle. The investigation revealed that the two vehicles are suspected to have been involved in robberies committed in Durban and surrounding areas. The profiling of suspects are still being conducted by the investigative team. The suspects are appearing in the Ntuzuma Magistrates’ Court this morning.
