Gauteng Police Commissioner and Community Safety MEC to account on recent violence, looting and destruction of property

The Gauteng Provincial Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Community Safety has called the Provincial Police Commission Lieutenant General Elias Mawela and Community Safety MEC Faith Mazibuko to appear before it and give an account on the role of law enforcement during the violence, looting and destruction of property that recently took place in various areas across the Province.

The Portfolio Committee is particularly concerned about the Police’s response in quelling the unrest which has had an unbearable and devastating impact on Gauteng as the economic hub of the country.

The Portfolio Committee has noted with regret the dithering and slow response by Police which made it possible for the unrest to prolong causing more damage to the economy and job losses, this at a time when the country is on a path to recover from the harrowing effects of Covid-19.

Members of the media are invited to cover the meeting.

Details of the Meeting are as follows:

Date: Thursday, 29 July 2021
