Gauteng residents urged to save water despite above average dam levels

The Gauteng Province’s dams which form part of the Integrated Vaal River System are currently at 97.7%, a slight decrease when the levels stood at 100.1% last year at this time. Despite the above average dam levels, the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) in Gauteng has called on residents to continue using water sparingly. The Department also calls the citizen of Gauteng to avoid activities which may result in water pollution. The call comes as the Department observes its Clear Rivers Campaign in the month of July, which seeks to raise awareness about the impact of pollution on the country’s water sources. As the campaign coincides with Nelson Mandela Month, the Department has urged citizens to dedicate their 67 minutes of goodwill activities towards cleaning rivers, streams, wetlands, dams, canals and any freshwater source. This should be done in small groups to avoid contravening Level 4 lockdown regulations. Here is the weekly dam levels update: • The Bon Accord Dam is at 104.2%, • The Bronkhorstspruit Dam at 93.6%, • The Rietvlei Dam at 99.8%, • The Roodeplaat Dam at 100.5%, • The Klipdrift Dam at 102.2%
