Gang member arrested with prohibited firearm

A 19-year-old gang member was arrested yesterday afternoon, 22 August 2021 after he allegedly threatened an off duty police officer in Windvogel.

It is alleged that on Sunday, 22 August 2021 at about 17:00, the police official was standing in his yard in 3rd Avenue in Windvogel when the two gang members approached him and threatened him. When the member noticed one suspect pulling out a firearm, he ran inside his house and immediately requested for backup. SAPS Bethelsdorp Crime Prevention members were first to respond. The suspects started running and the complainant and his colleagues chased after them on foot. The 19-year-old teenager disposed of a firearm while jumping over walls. He was arrested by SAPS Bethelsdorp Crime Prevention member in a house in 2nd Avenue.

The serial number of the firearm was filed off. He is detained on charges of possession of a prohibited firearm, illegal possession of ammunition, pointing of a firearm and attack on police.

He is expected to appear in the Gelvandale Magistrate’s Court soon.
