NORTHERN CAPE – The Provincial Head for Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences, Unit Brigadier Nicky Mills lauds Detective Sergeant Frans Louw for his meticulous investigation in this complicated case which led to the accused being sentenced to 10 years for rape.
On 30 October 2016 at about 4am, the 24-year-old female victim was on her way home when she was accosted by an unknown man who threatened her and dragged her to a tree next to the Strydenburg Hotel. The man was wearing a balaclava when he raped the victim. He was unknown to the victim, however after thorough investigations, police managed to link him positively with DNA.
Michael van Rooyen (28) was eventually traced and arrested on 14 March 2019 and remained in custody until he was sentenced.
Van Rooyen was found guilty in the Hopetown Regional Court and sentenced to 10 years direct imprisonment for the rape, recently.
