Phase 2 of the City of Cape Town’s Humanitarian Relief programme started in full swing this week. Alderman Grant Twigg, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Management, visited the Ravensmead and Epping Forest distribution points to assist subcouncils and ward councillors with the delivery of food parcels. R15 million has been budgeted for the Phase 2 roll out.

The ongoing global Covid-19 pandemic continues to negatively impact vulnerable communities, households and individuals. The City, as part of its wider response management initiatives to the pandemic, granted the Urban Management Directorate a total of R25 million in the 2020/21 financial year to implement a humanitarian food relief programme. R10 million was approved by Council in January 2021 and was rolled out across all wards within the metropolitan boundaries of the City. The roll out for Phase 2 for the remaining R15 million commenced this week in various subcouncils.

The programme is managed under the provisions of the City’s Grant-in-Aid Policy: GL 457200 (GIA: Grants and Sponsorships) which requires that the public is given notice about this initiative and invited to participate as interested applicants.

Of the 67 applications that the City received, 18 organisations have been screened and deemed compliant with all governance and implementation requirements.

This week we started rolling out our Phase 2 of the humanitarian relief programme in Subcouncils 6 and 7. We will continue this in all 24 subouncils.

‘While local government may not have the core delivery mandate for social relief, the City is playing its part to assist vulnerable residents who are bearing the brunt of this pandemic.

The City of Cape Town is taking a whole of society approach to assist our most vulnerable residents during these difficult times and all our councillors are in the field to assist their communities,‘ said Alderman Grant Twigg, Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Management.
