The number of arrests by the City’s enforcement agencies remains on par with trends before the introduction of an earlier curfew and prohibition on gatherings.
The City’s enforcement agencies made 198 arrests in the last week, and issued 40 972 fines for various transgressions.
METRO POLICE DEPARTMENT
Officers made 78 arrests, including 31 for the illegal possession of drugs, 19 arrests for outstanding warrants related to criminal cases and eight contact-related crimes.
On Sunday, 4 July 2021, Metro Police officers arrested a suspect for the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition in Manenberg.
At approximately 02:20, officers were doing crime prevention patrols when they noticed a suspicious male.
Upon approach, the suspect dropped something and ran away.
The officers apprehended the 35-year-old suspect and recovered a silver .38 Special Taurus revolver and five live rounds of ammunition.
On Wednesday, 30 June 2021, at around 13:30, officers arrested two suspects for malicious damage to property and robbery at Lusaka informal settlement in Nyanga.
The suspects were detained after officers followed up on a smash and grab incident at the N2 and Borchards Quarry. The victim positively identified one of the suspects. The duo, aged 21 and 37, were detained at Nyanga SAPS.
LAW ENFORCEMENT DEPARTMENT
Officers made 75 arrests and issued 2 188 notices. Officers attached to the LEAP programme made 58 of the arrests – 40 were drug-related, 11 for the possession of dangerous weapons and two for the possession of an unlicensed firearm.
The Law Enforcement Metal Theft Unit arrested 13 suspects during their weekly operations.
CAPE TOWN TRAFFIC SERVICE
Officers arrested 45 suspects, impounded 125 vehicles, 73 cell phones and issued 36 560 fines.
Among those arrested were 27 suspects who were caught driving under the influence of alcohol, and nine for reckless and negligent driving.
‘The number of people caught driving drunk during a time when alcohol sales are prohibited is an indication that illegal alcohol sales are continuing, in spite of the regulations. It is also further proof of the absolute disregard for law and order, which places the lives of the offenders at risk, but also those around them.
‘Our Traffic staff held a curfew operation in the CBD and surrounds on Friday evening, and issued 87 fines for violation of the curfew, eight for failure to wear masks and 253 fines for various other offences. This type of behaviour boggles the mind, especially when one considers the ever-increasing Covid-19 caseload,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
