Cable thieves caught cutting copper cables

DURBAN: Two suspects aged 29 and 35 appeared before the Phoenix Magistrates’ Court today on charges of tampering and damaging essential infrastructure.  

Last night at 22:00, police officers were conducting foot patrols at the Mount Edgecombe Railway line when they spotted two men cutting and pulling something from the railway line. The police officers tactically approached the suspects.  

Upon seeing the police officers, the suspects fled into the bushes. The team gave chase and two suspects were apprehended. The police officers recovered 33 metres of copper cable and maize meal bags with 5kg of copper cable. The total value of the recovered copper is R5000-00. The stolen property was positively identified as the property of Transnet.
