Bottle store owner and brother bust for transporting alcohol and bribing police officers

WELKOM – Members of Welkom Public Order Police were on patrol when they stopped a vehicle transporting beer from a bottle store and the brother was called and he tried to bribe police officers with money for his brother to be released. They will appear soon in Welkom Magistrate Court.

On 20 July 2021 at about 09:10 members of Welkom Public Order Police were on their routine visible Policing and Crime Prevention when they got information about a suspect transporting alcohol in a blue Toyota Corolla with Free State registration numbers.

The vehicle was spotted and followed until it was stopped next to Jabula wholesale in

Muizen street Welkom. Permission was asked to search the vehicle and 12 cases of beer were found. The driver was alone and he is the owner of a bottle store. Apparently the beer was transported from his bottle store to a party in Welkom.

A 50-year-old man was arrested for transporting alcohol during Alert Level 4 which is prohibited. Then he requested to call his brother who is 44-years-old. On his arrival, he produced R3000-00 to bribe the arresting officers. Then he was also arrested for bribing police officers. The cash was also seized. The arresting officer was Constable Patrick Mpempe with his team of Welkom Public Order Policing.
