The City of Cape Town and its partner Garden Cities handed over 23 homes on Thursday, 10 June 2021, to beneficiaries at the R74 million Greenville Phase 3 affordable housing project in Durbanville. Thus far, 1 698 homes have been handed over, including 323 homes to beneficiaries in Phase 3 of the project.

‘We are pleased with the progress the City and Garden Cities have made at the Phase 3 Greenville affordable housing project. Thus far the City and Garden Cities handed over more than 320 units in this phase alone, and we will continue to hand over homes to many more vulnerable residents over the coming months.

‘The City will continue to drive its redress agenda to ensure that those who were previously prevented from owning property are empowered as first-time homeowners. We encourage the new home owners to look after their properties and to do the necessary maintenance as these homes are now their financial assets.

‘The City recognises that new ways to deliver opportunities is needed, and that partnerships, such as the Garden Cities partnership, plays an important role in helping address the housing demand. This type of project that is based on partnership and innovation is a firm step in the right direction to deliver more affordable housing opportunities in well located areas. We will continue to look at all our options for greater and more diverse delivery methods so that we deliver opportunities to those who need it most,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Councillor Malusi Booi.

The Greenville project is a partnership between the City’s Human Settlements Directorate, the Western Cape Government’s Department of Human Settlements and developer, Garden Cities. The R74 million affordable housing project has provided more than 320 affordable units to qualifying beneficiaries thus far. Phases 1 and 2, saw a combined cost of R247 million, with Phase 2 being completed in August 2020.
