PARKTOWN – Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Elias Mawela was joined by Gauteng MEC for Community Safety Ms Faith Mazibuko, Sedibeng District Commissioner Major General Zodwa Molefe and senior officers from various law enforcement agencies as he led weekend O Kae Molao Operation in Sedibeng on Saturday 05 June 2021, to fight crime and enforce adjusted level two lockdown regulations.
The operation which commenced on Saturday 05 June 2021 at 16h00 until Sunday 06 June 2021 at 02h00 in Sebokeng, Sharpeville and Evaton started with a roadblock at Sebokeng Moshoeshoe Road and Golden Highway where 22 people were arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol.
The entourage then proceeded to a popular liquor outlet in Sharpeville that was reported to be contravening Covid-19 adjusted level 2 lockdown regulations. On arrival, police found the area to be overcrowded without observing social distancing, the place was closed and patrons ordered to disperse, two of the hosts were arrested. Four more liquor outlets were closed down, liquor confiscated and owners arrested after they were found operating without licences and being open during curfew time.
Police further arrested 20 people for failure to confine into place of residence during curfew time and 02 for not wearing masks in a public areas, after ordered to do so. Four illegal immigrants were arrested and to be processed by officials from Department of Home Affairs.
More than 132 other suspects were arrested in Sedibeng District, 179 in Ekurhuleni, 162 in West Rand and 433 in Tshwane during O Kae Molao Operations conducted over the weekend. The suspects were found to have committed offences that include assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, possession of drugs, dealing in dagga, murder, fraud, housebreaking and theft, reckless and negligent driving, possession of suspected stolen property and possession of ammunition.
The Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Elias applauded the integrated multidisciplinary forces of O Kae Molao who braved the cold Saturday night to ensure that people of Gauteng are safe from crime and comply with Covid-19 health protocols.
