Critically Injured Soldiers in DRC Repatriated by SANDF

Pretoria: The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has announced the successful repatriation of critically injured soldiers from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The soldiers, who are part of the Southern African Development Community Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (SAMIDRC), were involved in intense fighting in the Goma region.

According to South African Government News Agency, these troops will receive high-level medical care upon their arrival in South Africa. Meanwhile, the remaining soldiers are expected to return later in the week. The SANDF, in coordination with other relevant role players, has emphasized the efforts taken to ensure the safe return of the wounded members.

The escalation of conflict in the Goma region resulted in 14 troops losing their lives and others sustaining injuries at the hands of the M23 rebel group. The fighting occurred during M23’s advance on Sake and Goma from January 23 to 27. The SAMIDRC mission aims to help restore peace, security, and stability in the DRC, Africa’s second-largest country.

The SANDF has urged the public to respect and afford privacy to the injured members and their families during the healing process. The force remains committed to the welfare of its soldiers and has promised further updates as necessary.
