City’s CRU maintenance programme ongoing

The City of Cape Town’s Public Housing Department continues to prioritise its maintenance and upgrades programme at its Community Residential Units (CRU) across the metro. Over the past two years, the City spent approximately R1 billion in maintenance. Some of Hanover Park CRUs were visited today, 16 May 2022.

Today, Monday, 16 May 2022, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Councillor Malusi Booi, Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Sanitation, Councillor Zahid Badroodien and officials in both Directorates visited the Solent and Soetwater Courts in Hanover Park, to check up on the ongoing maintenance and upgrade requirements, and to follow up on residents’ queries.

‘The City’s Public Housing Department continues to carry out maintenance and upgrades at CRUs across the City and we are committed to improving service request turnaround times. Maintenance and repairs are ongoing at affordable rental units across the metro and we are pleased to see the completed work here today. Our staff members and contractors are working hard to upgrade our public housing, which will improve the lives and living conditions of our residents.

‘On average, the City attends to more than 100 service requests per month in Hanover Park alone and we will continue to seek ways to improve on our delivery. The City’s Public Housing teams and contractors have been busy in the area and we ask residents to please be patient with us as we work through all service requests. Sadly, many service requests are vandalism-related, which severely drains the City’s maintenance budget. These maintenance costs are one of the biggest reasons why normal maintenance is often delayed at City rental units.

‘We remind residents to report their maintenance and repairs needs to us as soon as they can and to use correct service channels. We thank City staff and contractors for their hard work while we continue to prioritise maintenance at all CRUs over the coming months,’ said Councillor Booi.
