Operation Vala Konke yields results in Northern Cape

Several suspects are expected to appear in Magistrates Courts in the Northern Cape on drug related crimes following Operation Vala Konke successes in the province.

Police spokesperson, Captain Olebogeng Tawana, said drugs confiscated during the arrests include crystal meth, dagga and mandrax tablets.

“On Thursday… two male suspects were arrested by members of the ZF Mgcawu District Task Team, K9 Unit, Paballelo Visible Policing and Upington Border Police… in possession of dagga weighing 6.25kg, with an estimated street value of R156 250.

“Police… in the John Taolo Gaetsewe District pounced on crystal meth with an estimated street value of R17 100, including copper cables weighing 4kg, resulting in the detention of the suspects. Another suspect was found in possession of dagga with an estimated street value of R2 300 in Mapoteng village near Mothibistad.

“[In Kathu], a 26-year-old suspect is behind bars subsequent to being found in possession of suspected stolen property, which included bicycles, laptops, a television set, computer monitors, an I-pad, shoes, a hammer and crystal meth.

“A joint operation by members of Marydale and Prieska Visible Policing yielded positive results when they arrested a 29-year-old suspect for dealing in drugs. The suspect was found on his premises in possession of crystal meth with an estimated street value of more than R22 000,” he said.

Tawana added that another 24 suspects were arrested on various other charges during daily wanted suspect tracing operations in the province’s Pixly Ka Seme District.

“These suspects have been evading arrest and failed to appear before various courts, as warned by the Magistrates Courts. They are facing different charges ranging from murder, attempted murder, theft, malicious damage to property, rape, assault to cause grievous bodily harm, robbery and contravention of protection order,” he said.

Meanwhile, police in KwaZulu-Natal have arrested three suspects following a business robbery in the Durban central business district.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Robert Netshiunda, said the suspects were caught in the act by Vigilant Tactical Response Team (TRT) members during routine patrolling.

“Four armed men are reported to have stormed into a shop and allegedly demanded money, cigarettes and cell phones. One suspect reportedly left the shop with the robbed items, and the other three remained behind and continued ransacking the shop.

“At that point, the TRT members who were patrolling the area noticed what was happening and acted swiftly. The three suspects were duly arrested and three firearms were found in their possession. No shots were fired and no injuries were reported. The search for the outstanding suspect is underway,” Netshiunda said.

Mayor Hill-Lewis hails multi-agency effort to ensure safer beaches for all over festive season

Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis visited the Strand beach and public pool today to view the various initiatives the City has in place to ensure the public and visitors are able to safely enjoy Cape Town’s beaches this festive season. Law Enforcement, life-guarding and the Identikidz programme have all contributed to a successful festive season on Cape Town beaches and at community public pools. Despite the immense impact of sustained high-stages of load-shedding on City sewer pump stations and related infrastructure, quick responses by City teams have meant that, of Cape Town’s 300km coastline, just 1,4km was subjected to temporary precautionary closures due to sewer spills resulting largely from electrical faults and illegal dumping. As of today, all of Cape Town’s beaches are open and available for all to enjoy, save for a section at Gordon’s Bay due to reopen soon. Read more below.

At Strand Beach, the Mayor observed the City’s multi-agency efforts which have been rolled out at 29 beaches, tidal pools and coastline stretches this festive season with the support of over 4 000 uniformed staff. The Mayor was joined by Mayco members JP Smith (Safety) and Patricia van der Ross (Community Services and Health).

‘I would like to thank every City official working over the festive season to ensure a safe and fun experience for all in Cape Town, especially on our busy beaches, which are the heart of our bustling tourist economy. In Strand alone, officials estimate that hundreds of thousands of people visited this beach, which is great for the economy, businesses and traders around here. It is good to see Strand beach looking lively today after a section was temporarily closed due to an electrical fault at a sewer pump station. Sustained load-shedding continues to impact City infrastructure, as does discharge of foreign items into the sewer system. Where these incidents occur, we put safety first by effecting temporary precautionary closures until water quality results show it is safe for recreational use. Quick responses from our teams has enabled us to keep 99% of our coastline open and safer for all at any time,’ said Mayor Hill-Lewis.

A multi-disciplinary team ensured responsive management to incidents amid heightened load-shedding on sewer infrastructure, including professionals representing Environmental Management, Coastal Management, Water and Sanitation, City Health, Recreation and Parks, Law Enforcement and Urban Waste Management.

The City’s priority programme to clean up waterways and public places will see at least an R8 billion investment in water and sanitation infrastructure over the next three years, including more generators and measures to build resilience against the impact of load-shedding.

‘It is vitally important that we sustain momentum to end load-shedding over time in Cape Town. Even generators are not a fail-safe mechanism to protect our basic service infrastructure, as these can also fail in sustained higher load-shedding phases. We are aiming to protect Capetonians from up to four stages of load-shedding within this term through various measures. This includes buying independent power to lessen Eskom reliance, paying businesses and residents to sell power back to the City, and incentives for voluntary energy savings under our Power Heroes programme,’ said the Mayor.

370 children reunited with families on beaches; 6 700 litres of alcohol confiscated

The Mayor further observed the City’s Identikidz programme in action today, which seeks to prevent children and parents from being separated on busy beaches. Identikidz has tagged more than 90 000 children at participating beaches since its launch in mid-December, reuniting around 370 children with their families. A further 13 children were placed in the care of the Provincial Department of Social Development when night fell and their families could still not be reached. A staggering 65% of reunions happened over the New Year’s long weekend.

The City further ensured the availability of 21 public swimming pools despite the national chlorine shortages, from Sea Point to Khayelitsha. Lifeguard deployments at these facilities helped to ensure there were no fatal drownings recorded this festive season.

Lifeguards were also deployed to 29 beaches, tidal pools, and coastline stretches, assisted by Western Province Lifesaving, City enforcement services, the NSRI and the City’s Beach Buddies, among others. A total of nine fatal drownings have been recorded since September 2022.

City law enforcement agencies have been hard at work maintaining order and upholding by-laws to ensure public places are safer for all. Alcohol confiscations on beaches increased year-on-year, with over 18 500 bottles and 6700 litres of alcohol from 1 Dec 2022 – 2 Jan 2023, up from 4 800 litres last season.

In total, more than 4 000 uniformed staff such as Metro Police, lifeguards, Law Enforcement, Traffic officers and firefighters helped to ensure the wellbeing of residents and tourists.

Across the City, enforcement agencies made 1291 arrests and 33 guns off our streets, with 22 of these guns confiscated by officers linked to the Law Enforcement Advancement Programme (LEAP) to expand safety resources in crime hotspots, together with the Western Cape Government.

The City’s Disaster Risk Management Centre played a pivotal role in coordinating the overall response to high stages of load-shedding experienced in December, as well as the City’s multi-agency Festive Season Coordinating Committee.

A total of 415 staff members and DRMC volunteers were deployed to beaches and major events including sporting events, festivals and the Tweede Nuwejaar and Cape Malay road marches.

More boots on the ground yielding excellent results with confiscation of R300 000 worth of drugs

WESTERN CAPE - Efforts by Western Cape police to eradicate drug abuse yielded excellent results with the confiscation of drugs with an estimated street value of R300 000-00 during midweek Safer Festive Season operations under the theme “More boots on the ground towards enhanced police visibility” in the Klein Karoo.

On Wednesday, 03 January 2022 at about 07:30 members attached to the rural flying squad were strategically deployed along the R62 when they spotted a silver Volkswagen Polo traveling in a high speed. The vigilant members immediately gave chase and brought it to a halt at the entrance to Calitzdorp. While approaching they got a scent of cannabis and proceeded with a search when they found two black bags on the back seat of the vehicle, containing 20 kilogram of dagga with an estimated street value of R160 000-00. The 39-year-old driver was subsequently arrested on a charge of dealing in drugs and the find was confiscated as evidence.

Meanwhile, later the same day at about 19:30, Oudtshoorn Crime Prevention Unit members acted on intelligence when they stopped a minibus enroute to Oudtshoorn from George along the N12. A search of the vehicle ensued which led to the discovery of two bags of dagga weighing 16 kilogram on board the vehicle. The members confiscated the consignment with an estimated street value of R128 000-00 and arrested a 32-year-old man linked to the find on a charge of possession of drugs.

Furthermore, various units in the Garden Route District embarked on crime combatting operations in Heidelberg, Uniondale and Mossel Bay precincts to rid these communities of criminalities. These focused operations aimed against drug and liquor abuse were conducted from Tuesday, 03 January 2023 and resulted in the confiscation of 239 dagga stops, an additional 40 grams of dagga, 74 grams tik, 562 dagga plants and 117 litres of liquor.

Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile, had nothing but praise for the commitment of those deployed during SFS operations and welcomed the large quantities of drugs confiscated. “These operations forms part of concerted efforts by police to safeguard communities and visitors to the region during the festive period and beyond. High visibility with the strategic deployment of resources would be maintained during this weekend’s operations to ensure that there is more boots on the ground”. Lt Gen Patekile concluded.

Transformation fund to assist black tourism businesses

The Department of Tourism is calling on all black-owned tourism enterprises to apply for the Tourism Transformation Fund (TTF).

The department, together with the National Empower Fund (NEF), aims to provide a financial boost to these enterprises through the fund.

“The TTF aims to drive transformation in the tourism sector in a more direct and impactful manner that will not only assist black-owned tourism enterprises to expand and grow, but also to catalyse the rise of a new generation of black-owned tourism enterprises to propel the tourism sector to greater heights.

“The TTF provides a combination of grant funding, debt financing and equity contributions to facilitate capital investment in the tourism sector by black entrepreneurs. The grant funding portion is used to reduce the approved loan finance and/or equity contribution by the NEF, where commercial viability of the tourism project has been established,” the department said.

The fund will also provide post investment support to enterprises through the NEF and the department.

New and existing black-owned enterprises are eligible for funding if they satisfy the following requirements:

• The enterprise must provide services to tourists as its direct clients.

• The project must have proven commercial viability and sustainability, as per the NEF funding criteria and due diligence.

• The enterprise must be majority (51%) black-owned.

• The enterprise must be black management controlled.

• Shareholders must be operationally involved in the business.

• The enterprise must be registered as a legal entity in South Africa in terms of South African law.

• The enterprise must either be a black-owned Exempted Micro Enterprise (EME) or black-owned Qualifying Small Enterprise (QSE), in terms of the Amended Tourism Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) Sector Code.

“The department’s grant contribution for approved applications is limited to 50% of the total loan finance and/or equity contribution approved by the NEF and is capped at a maximum of R5 million per beneficiary.

“Co-financing tourism transactions between the NEF and/or other accredited Development Finance Institutions is allowed under the Fund. Any such arrangement needs to be agreed to by the NEF,” the department said.

Applications can be accessed at www.nefcorp.co.za and can be submitted at NEF offices at West Block, 187 Rivonia Road, Morningside, 2057 or emailed to tourism@nefcorp.co.za.
