Huawei accueille le 9e Sommet mondial du rail à Berlin

Protesters Block Part of South Africa’s Longest Highway

South African protesters angry over water shortages shut down part of the country’s longest highway with rock barricades and burning tires.

Police described the situation in Ventersburg in the Free State province as volatile. The rural town is a popular refueling and resting place for motorists and truckers travelling on the N1 highway, which stretches from Cape Town in the south to the Beit Bridge border post with Zimbabwe in the north.

Warrant Officer Loraine Earle says the Welkom Public Order Policing Unit is on the ground monitoring the situation. She says they have spoken to some of the protesters and asked about their demands.

“They started this morning to protest. It’s because of the water situation in town. It’s now for the past few weeks that they don’t have water,” she said. “Members are on the scene. They’re monitoring the situation and nobody was arrested as yet.”

She says they have had water problems in Ventersburg on-and-off for the past seven weeks with no water for the past three weeks.

Those using the highway at Ventersburg have been advised to take alternative routes.

Deputy Minister Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu leads outreach campaigns in Kimberley, 26 to 28 Sept

In pursuit of improving efficient delivery of social services to South Africans in far flung areas of the country, the Deputy Minister of Social Development, Mme Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu, will from Monday, 26 until Wednesday, 28 September, be spearheading outreach campaigns in Kimberley, Northern Cape.

The Deputy Minister will on her first day in Kimberley, conduct a Know Your Status campaign with local faith based Non-Profit Organisations (NPOs), to remind them about the importance of compliance with the NPO Act of 71 OF 1997 and the implications thereof.

This she will embark on to assist non-compliant NPOs to remain registered with the Department of Social Development so they may render essential services to poor communities.

On the second day, she will handover Kutlwano Early Childhood Development (ECD) Centre in partnership with Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) and CIPLA Foundation. Kutlwano Early Childhood Development centre was originally housed in a corrugated iron shack.

Through the partnership with Deputy Minister Bogopane-Zulu, ACSA, in collaboration with CIPLA Foundation funded a new state of the art structure at a total cost of over Four Million Rand.

The Deputy Minister will as part of building up a momentum for decriminalization of Sex Work in South Africa, conclude her three-day service delivery visit by conducting Sex Workers Dialogue to interact directly and hear issues, hardships and experiences of Sex Workers in Kimberley and remote areas.

These activities form part of the build-up to the Social Development Month campaign which seeks to reach out and deliver social services to poor South Africans across the country through a coordinated portfolio approach.

Employment and Labour conducts mega blitz inspections, 26 Sept

Gauteng Employment and Labour inspectors to conduct mega blitz inspections targeting wholesale and retail and hospitality sector

The Department of Employment and Labour through Inspection and Enforcement Services (IES) in Gauteng will conduct a week long (26- 30 September 2022) inspections to employers operating in the Wholesale and Retail and Hospitality sectors to check the level of compliance with labour legislation.

The inspections will gauge the employers’ compliance with the Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA), Sectoral Determination, including the National Minimum Wage (NMW) Act, Unemployment Insurance Act, and the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act.

The Deputy Minister, Boitumelo Moloi during her visit, will be accompanied by Gauteng MEC of Community Safety, Faith Mazibuko, the Director General of Department of Employment and Labour Thobile Lamati  and Inspector-General Aggy Moiloa.
