The City of Cape Town’s Executive Mayor, Alderman Dan Plato, conducted a site inspection of the successfully completed Belhar Main Road project site in Highbury, Kuils River. The City has invested R49 million in the extension of Belhar Main Road to assist with alleviating traffic congestion in Highbury and surrounding areas. This extension will support future developments planned for this area.
This road project linked Highbury Road with the Stellenbosch Arterial by extending Belhar Main Road from Highbury Road up to Stellendale Road in Kuils River.
‘These projects are aimed at improving the use of our roadways for motorists. I believe the extension of this road will definitely provide some congestion relief and improve overall access to the Highbury area. We once again would like to thank residents and motorists for their patience while the construction works were under way,’ said Executive Mayor, Alderman Dan Plato.
The construction at Belhar Main Road is now complete and the contractor is currently finalising some landscaping on site.
Some notable facts about the project:
• the new road covers a distance of 1,45 km and will have surfaced sidewalks along the entire length of the road
• the new road is a duelled carriageway from Stellenbosch Arterial to the first traffic circle at Stellendale Road, and thereafter as a single carriageway road
Additionally, the City of Cape Town will spend an estimated total capital expenditure in excess of R10 billion in the rolling out of Phase 2A of our Integrated Public Transport Plan. More than R1 billion will be spent in 2021/22, making this the largest Mega Project ever approved for Public Transport for the City of Cape Town.
In a time of severe economic contraction amid a global pandemic, the roll out of the medium-term plan will focus on poverty alleviating job opportunities, which includes more than 8000 jobs (7,206 jobs as a direct result of construction work; 800 permanent employment opportunities owing to operations; and 250 to 300 additional job opportunities within the corridor).
